The Childhood Money Rule that Dictates Consultant Income

High-performing consultants rarely underearn because of skills, strategy, or market conditions. They underearn because an early internal operating system is still running the show.

Beliefs installed long before they made the decision to be in business for themselves govern what feels safe, what feels possible, and what they unconsciously allow themselves to receive.

When an old rule conflicts with present-day client value, the old rule wins.

Some lucky people inherit a money stance with a positive orientation to wealth. Others inherit the opposite. Some, my brother included, have an early life experience that shapes their attraction to money.

A Different Code

My father once owned a hotel. During the Niagara hydro-electric project, the hotel was packed every weekend with workers celebrating payday. They drank hard on Friday and Saturday nights. Every Sunday after church my father cleaned the bar. My younger brother loved tagging along because he was allowed to keep whatever coins the drinkers left behind. They didn’t bother with loose change, and there was plenty of it.

Decades later, at my father’s celebration of life, he told the story about loving those Sunday mornings. He laughed, “That’s how I became mercenary. I developed the belief that money is everywhere. I still believe that money is everywhere.”

For him, it’s true. It has always been true. It’s simply part of who he is.

That one belief, formed early, reinforced weekly, and never questioned, overrode my family’s scarcity mindset.

It became the hidden driver of his entire life. “Money is everywhere.” No affirmations. No journaling. No searching for cosmic meaning. No anxiety about money, ever.

Money feels friendly to him, and life keeps proving him right.

That belief doesn’t just sit in the background. It shows up in what you charge, what you accept, and what you allow.

This is what most consultants overlook. Income follows the money code you absorbed as a child, not the value you deliver today. If your environment was one of limitation, you will recreate limitation until you reset the internal code.

Your income cannot outperform your internal code.

Real change begins by updating the system that decides what you feel allowed to earn.
